Mussel is not like any other Italian mussel. This grows wild on the rocks below sea level along the shores between Ancona and Sirolo, mainly in the Portonovo bay. The difference from other kinds is the aesthetical shape and taste. It is torn from the rocks by skin divers with hooks. Once in your hand it will seem a black violet casket smelling an intense and wild sea flavour. When you will taste it you will be immediately invaded by a strong marine sensation through your nose and palate. In Ancona area mussels can be found in bars and restaurants, and can be coupled with a good glass of white wine.
Nevertheless, in order to preserve this precious species, mussels fishing is controlled and limited with a severe regulation.
The recipes to prepare mussels are numerous; we only suggest you to try them with a few drops of lemon on.
